École Émilie-Tremblay

Whitehorse, YT

Our school is named Émilie-Tremblay in memory of one of the first white women who made the long journey to Dawson City at the end of the last century, shortly before the gold rush. Émilie Tremblay was a native of Saint-Joseph d'Alma, Quebec. We are proud of this pioneer who was able to chart a course for Francophones. The school's first steps date back to 1983, when parents who were members of the Association franco-yukonnaise and teachers asked for support from Whitehorse school committees in order to create a framework French program. A survey at the time revealed that 67 children were eligible for instruction in French. At the same time, the AFY asks the Ministry of Education to establish the French framework program.
