About Inuujaq School
Inuujaq School uses the qulliq language of instruction (LOI) model. This model was chosen because Inuktitut is the first language of the community. The qulliq LOI model supports and encourages students' use of Inuktitut.
Using this model, students in kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in Inuktitut about 90 per cent of the time. Grades four to six gradually integrate more English, with core academics taught in Inuktitut. Later grades include even more English, with half of instruction given in Inuktitut and half given in English. Elders are also encouraged and involved in meeting the instructional needs of our students.
MISSION STATEMENT
It is the mission of Inuujaq School staff, students, and parents to meet the goals of respect, community and literacy.
RESPECT
We will be kind and thoughtful to others. We will treat other people the way we wish to be treated. We will listen to others when they have something to say. We will keep school property clean and safe.
COMMUNITY
We believe in community-based education. Valuable learning also takes place outside the school. The whole community helps children learn and we will co-operate with each other to encourage learning. Learning is a lifelong process.
LITERACY
The ability to read and write in both Inuktitut and English is important. Every person can improve his or her language skills.
