Takhini Elementary
Whitehorse, YT
Takhini is a K-7 elementary school that has a proud heritage and place in the history of Yukon education. We take special pride in our school programs and innovative approaches to education. As a northern school, we have access to a wealth of nature and opportunities for land-based learning. We believe it is important for our students to build on their traditions and take part in programs that aim to create an even greater sense of community.

About Takhini Elementary School
School History
Takhini Elementary School was opened on September 15, 1961 by Commissioner F.H. Collins. The students were children from Army and Air Force families who lived in Camp Takhini, Hillcrest, and Valleyview.
In 1987, two classrooms were created in the old Recreation Centre for our students because we’d grown too big for the main building. An addition to the school was completed in 1988, and our kindergarten classes are in it. In the fall of 1989 three portable classrooms joined our computer lab to form our north annex. In September 1992, with the opening of Elijah Smith Elementary, Takhini students were once again all housed in our main building.
In September 1996, with the phasing out of the junior highs in the Whitehorse area, the grade seven students were once again housed in the elementary schools.
About the Logo
The trees and mountain represent the natural features of Takhini's playground. The circle in the centre is a gold pan in which the children are "nuggets". The open book represents learning - the reason that we are all at school.
